Wood Waterbeds

Can you put wood frame waterbeds upstairs?

Absolutely! It is a myth that even the heaviest of wood-frame waterbeds are too heavy for the second story of a house.  Any structure built to code has the necessary strength to support a waterbed.  Also, beds are often placed against load bearing walls which provide additional support.

Will I get seasick on a wood frame waterbed?

No – another myth.  This simply does not happen.  It is especially false most people sleep on reduced-motion mattresses.

I’ve heard they’re saggy and move all the time.  Can they give you good back support?

With the exception of the full-motion mattress, there are layers of polyester fiber and foam that give the mattress firmness.  As the firmness increases the motion decreases.  Additionally, most reduced-motion mattresses contain additional layers of material in the lumbar (lower back) region.  This gives the lumbar area more support and prevents sagging down into an unnatural posture.  It is possible to get a water mattress that has no motion whatsoever but still provides the body with proper, conformable support.

Can you still get parts, supplies, and accessories for wood fr ame waterbeds?

Yes, SLEEP on it still carries all necessary parts and components for wood frame waterbeds.  We also have a full line of accessories, chemicals, and linens.

Do they ever leak?

With modern seam technologies, the instance of leaks is small.  It does, however, occur infrequently.  Fortunately, there is a safety liner in the bed that prevents that water from getting out of the bed.  It is important that this liner is inspected from time to time to ensure that it is serviceable.

What does the term “California size” mean?

Wood-frame waterbeds have a unique sizing system.  All standard wood waterbeds are seven feet long.  A super single is four feet wide; a queen is five feet wide, a king, six.  Standard queen and king beds are 80 inches. The “California” descriptor is often used to indicate that a king mattress is extra long: 84 inches.  As this is always the case with wood-frame waterbeds, the word “California” is usually omitted when speaking of them.

Softside Waterbeds

Can I use softsides with regular furniture?

Sure.  Softside waterbed sets can be used on most standard bedroom furniture.  There are numerous metal frame systems that can be used with beds to support the additional weight of the water.  These frames do not require altering the bed in any way.

Can I use softsides with regular sheets?

Yes. Softside waterbeds are of standard size.  Although conventional bedding fits softsides, it is still sometimes necessary to use deep-sided sheets depending on the thickness of your mattress.

Do I still get the benefits of sleeping on water?

Softside waterbeds provide the same benefits as wood-frame beds: conformability, adjustability, warmth, and reduced pressure against the skin and joints.

My partner and I do not agree on how high to set the heat. Is ther e a solution?

In a word: DUAL.  Having the sleeping surface of a waterbed divided into two separate chambers allows each person to choose their own firmness and heat levels.  Additionally, having a dual system reduces the amount of motion that is transferred across the bed.  This means that when you move your partner is not disturbed.

What are the benefits of a dual mattress?

Having the sleeping surface of a softside waterbed divided into two separate chambers allows each person to choose their own firmness and heat levels.  Additionally, having a dual system reduces the amount of motion transferred across the bed.  This means you disturb your partner less when you move and vice versa. Rule of thumb: two people, two bladders; one person, one bladder.

What is the benefit of heat in a bed?

Heat in a bed provides for better rejuvenation during your sleep.  Heat dilates the capillaries in the skin allowing greater blood flow.  This allows more nutrients and oxygen to get into the cells.  The cells are then able to recharge and heal faster.

Can I wash the outer cover of my softside?

While in some cases it might be possible, this is rarely a good idea.  Water saturation may be harmful to some materials used in the making of the cover.  The mechanical action created in a washing machine is a far more dangerous thing; it can cause the cover to become distorted as some materials stretch more than others. Drying is a problem, also.  Some materials may shrink making the cover too small to fit properly on the bed. Inconsistent shrinkage may also distort the shape of the cover.  As with all beds, it is vital to use a good quality mattress pad.  This prevents the mattress from getting dirty in the first place.

I have heard a lot about airbeds.  Why are they superior t o a regular bed?

Adjustability and conformability make airbeds tremendously desirable.  By molding to the exact shape of your body airbeds excel at providing a comfortable surface while still providing adequate support.  Add to this the fact that you can adjust the firmness level of the bed at the touch of a button.  Finally, most airbeds are available as dual system giving each person control over their half of the sleeping surface.

Do they ever leak?

With today’s high-quality latex chambers, leaks are very rare.  If necessary, replacement is quickly and easily done.

How do you know if you are going to like it?

The adjustability of the airbed virtually assures that you will be able to find the right setting for you.  Most objections to sleeping surfaces have to do with their firmness.  An airbed allows you to change the firmness level to your preference without getting a new mattress.

Aren’t they expensive?

If compared with other mattress systems of similar quality, airbeds are roughly equivalent in cost. There are full quality airbeds starting at $999.99 in a queen size.  As airbeds outlast most regular mattresses, they actually are less expensive in the long run.

Can I use an airbed on my existing boxsprings?

Airbeds may be placed on any serviceable boxsprings or solid foundation.  Old or damaged boxsprings can diminish the performance and comfort of the airbed.  As a general rule, if the mattress is worn out so is the boxsprings.  Airbeds perform best on solid foundations.

Can I wash the outer cover of my airbed?

While in some cases it might be possible, this is rarely a good idea.  Water saturation may be harmful to some materials used in the making of the cover.  The mechanical action created in a washing machine is a far more dangerous thing; it can cause the cover to become distorted as some materials stretch more than others. Drying is a problem, also.  Some materials may shrink making the cover too small to fit properly on the bed. Inconsistent shrinkage may also distort the shape of the cover.  As with all beds, it is vital to use a good quality mattress pad.  This prevents the mattress from getting dirty in the first place.

Why is memory foam better?

Memory foam has the remarkable ability to mold exactly to the shape of your body, providing proper postural alignment and support.  It also reduces the pressure applied to your skin and joints.  Both of these qualities are vital to a good night’s sleep.

Does it always come back up?

Yes.  Each morning after you get up the mattress returns to its original shape.  The product’s warranty ensures that this will occur throughout the products life.

Isn’t it really expensive?

If compared with other mattress systems of similar quality, memory foam mattresses are roughly equivalent in cost.  As memory foam mattresses can last up to twice as long as regular mattresses, they actually are less expensive in the long run.

Can I use a memory foam mattress on my existing boxsprings?

Memory foam mattresses may be placed on any serviceable boxsprings or solid foundation.  Old or damaged boxsprings can diminish the performance and comfort of the mattress.  As a general rule, if the mattress is worn out so is the boxsprings.  Memory foam performs best on a solid foundation.

Won’t sleeping on foam make you hot?

Quite the contrary.  The open cell structure of memory foam and the foundation foam allow for improved air circulation over some other products. This prevents excessive heat buildup.  Additionnally, newer foam technology including gel foams all but ensures the bed will not retain heat.

Can I wash the cover of my memory foam mattress?

In most cases, using a waterproof mattress protector can make it unnecessary fo cleanse your cover. The cover on some models can be removed and cleaned as needed.  Some are replaceable as well.

What is this about a “breaking-in” period for a memory foam mattress ?

The feel of memory foam mattresses and pillows can change slightly over the several weeks of use.   As the cells of the foam fully open up, the foam becomes a bit softer and more comfortable. This rarely takes more than a few weeks.  However, in recent years, the foam technology has changed making the foams more responsive and less likely to need to change.

I have never heard of latex bedding.  Is it new?

Latex beds were quite popular in the 1950s and 1960s. Though they have been around since their availability was limited until recently.  Now they are again in the mainstream bedding market and gaining new popularity.

Why is latex foam better?

Latex foam has properties that make it a good support material.  It gives great support for the posture.  One of latex’s biggest assets is its durability; it can easily last over 20 years!

Why is it so firm?

Older latex beds had a firmer feel due to the firmness of the latex core.  Those mattresses were simply a quilted cover over a block of latex.  Today some latex mattresses have additional layers of softer latex or other materials over the core so that you get a plusher feel while still getting the outstanding support of the core.

Is it more expensive?

Compared to equivalent products, latex can be slightly more expensive.  Its performance and durability more than makeup for this additional cost.

I’ve always heard that I should have a firm mattress.  Is f irm really better?

NO! NO! NO! Most people spell “firm” h-a-r-d.  Good support is crucial to a good nights sleep; but, support and plushness are not mutually exclusive.  Many of today’s mattresses have additional layers of materials on their surfaces to give them a more comfortable feel.  These mattresses provide both comfort and proper spinal support.

Do I have to buy a set?

No.  However, many manufacturers refuse to guarantee mattresses if purchased separately.  The reason for this is that if a new mattress is placed on an old, worn out boxsprings, the mattress can be ruined in a matter of months.  Some mattresses are placed on platform beds where a boxsprings is not needed. In most cases, this presents no problems.  It is important to note that many people do not want to but a set in an effort to save money.  The fact of the matter is that the mattress constitutes the majority of the set’s price; so savings are minimal.  As a general rule, if the mattress is worn out the boxsprings is too, even if it doesn’t look like it.

Do you have a 30-day comfort guarantee?

To borrow from the above answer, NO! NO! NO!  Virginia Bedding and Upholstered Furniture Law, Section 32.1-215 forbids the selling of used mattresses unless they are sterilized and retagged as used.  Once a bed is in your home it is considered used.  Unlike many other products that can be easily resold if returned to the store, bedding cannot be.  Many stores and companies tell their customers that the beds are returned to the manufacturers or donated to local charities.  This is usually not true; most manufacturers do not take them back because of the same laws.  Local charities deny that they receive them.  The retailers simply put those mattresses back in stock for delivery to the next person.

SLEEP on it DOES NOT sell used mattresses.

What is a body impression?

A body impression is a place on a mattress where a person sleeps.  All mattresses form body impressions to some extent.  It is more noticeable on plusher mattresses.  Not only is a body impression not a defect, it is beneficial.  The bed conforms to your shape in the area where you sleep.  This allows the mattress to give you greater comfort and support.

What does the warranty cover?

Mattress warranties, agreements between the buyer and the manufacturer, cover defects in materials and workmanship in the mattress system for the stated period.  They in no way to be interpreted as comfort guarantees.

Why are newer mattresses getting so thick?

Mattresses are getting thicker because more layers of materials are being placed between the top of the springs and the top of the mattress.  These materials give the mattress an improved ability to provide proper support in the form of correct postural alignment and reduced pressure.

What is the difference between a solid foundation and a boxsprings ?

A boxsprings is a unit that contains springs or other types of torsion elements.  These elements allow the boxsprings to deflect or flex when weight is applied through the mattress.  A solid foundation is made of wood and does not have the ability to flex or deflect.  They appear the same from the outside. It is important to know which is under the mattress you are considering and why.  Both have their uses under different mattress types.

How do you clean a mattress?

The best answer here is to say “Don’t let it get dirty.”  This is why using a good quality mattress pad and washing it monthly are crucial.  Some mattress can be cleaned using water-free solvents.  Water can absorb into the materials underneath the cover.  If the materials don’t dry thoroughly mildew may occur.  It is best to consult the manufacturer before you begin.

What are the common sizes of mattresses?

The following is a list of the common mattress sizes. They are relatively standard in the industry, but can still vary a little. Please see our Mattress Sizes and Selectionpage for more details and illustrations.

Twin (Single): 39” x 75” Twin extra-long: 39” x 80” Full (Double): 54” x 75” Full extra-long: 54” x 80” Queen: 60” x 80” King: 75” x 80” California King: 72” x 84”

Do you have to get a pre-packaged set?

No.  You can mix and match bases and mattress options to exactly suit your needs and budget.

Why are adjustable beds more expensive?

The components used in the base are more costly than the components used in a standard frame and boxsprings for obvious reasons. These components give the bed its ability to move up and down, massage, etc. Most beds have wireless remotes.  It is important to note that while these bases are more expensive; they are very durable, long outlasting traditional boxsprings, for example.

Do you have to get one with all the bells and whistles?

No. Basic adjustable bases allow the head and foot to go up and down.  While it has no other features, the quality level and warranty are exactly the same as the more expensive models.

What is the deal with “extra-long” sizing?

Both the twin and full adjustable bases are built “extra long.”  As the head and foot are raised, the bed tends to shorten.  On the shorter twin and full sizes, this can cause the problem of sticking your feet off the end!  The extra length prevents this.  Both standard length twin and full sizes are available in some models and sometimes at additional cost.

Aren’t adjustable beds for older people?

Absolutely not.  Anyone who suffers from back or neck problems, gastric reflux, breathing difficulties, circulation problems, or anyone who sleeps better in their recliner than in their bed can benefit from sleeping in an adjustable bed.

I have an adjustable bed now; the base unit is fine but the mattress is worn out. Can I buy just a replacement mattress?

Sure. You can buy an innerspring, air, latex foam, or memory foam mattress only in the correct size for that bed.
